Game theory: where your effort goes
Before asking how to get better at something, ask what getting better will actually earn you.
That is the idea I would keep from Tim Denning’s essay. Its stronger promise—that understanding game theory makes success automatic—goes beyond what the argument establishes.
Game theory studies decisions whose results depend on other people’s decisions. It helps us examine incentives and alternatives, without supplying a universal explanation for success.
When everyone tries harder
Section titled “When everyone tries harder”Imagine two coworkers competing for one promotion. Their work is equally good, but their manager treats staying late as evidence of commitment. One starts staying two extra hours. The other follows. Their relative position is unchanged; both now give up more of their evenings.
Extra hours became an entry fee for staying competitive. The employer gained availability without creating another promotion. Changing how work is judged or finding a different role could change the incentives. Adding another hour may invite another round.
Learning a transferable skill could leave you better equipped even without the promotion. An attendance contest may leave you mostly tired.
Capitalism adds a second question: who receives the benefit?
Section titled “Capitalism adds a second question: who receives the benefit?”Creating something useful and receiving its rewards are separate problems. Suppose a worker invents a process that saves ten hours a week. The contract, ownership, and bargaining arrangements influence whether the gain becomes higher pay, more output, lower prices, or more time off. The invention alone does not determine the distribution.
That is why alternatives matter. Being able to reject a poor offer changes a negotiation. But bills, caring responsibilities, and local opportunities can limit that freedom. “Choose a better game” can be difficult to act on. Sometimes improving the rules together matters more than finding an individual exit.
My view
Section titled “My view”I would use game theory to become more observant, without making every interaction a contest. Incentives deserve attention; they do not reveal everyone’s motives with certainty. Trust and cooperation can create benefits that neither person could produce alone.
The most useful questions are ordinary ones:
- What is actually rewarded here, and who decides?
- How will other people respond if I change my behavior?
- What would I still have gained if I failed to get the prize?
When learning, a grade is one outcome. Understanding something well enough to use it elsewhere can outlast the competition.
Money is an incomplete measure of a life. A better-paid role can cost time, health, or work you value. Game theory helps compare consequences once we say what matters. It cannot decide what should matter to us.
